Gardening through the year

Minnesota seasons don't mess around. Here's how we organize the nursery calendar — and when we recommend planting around Excelsior (Zone 4b, last frost typically mid-May).

Spring

March–May. Greenhouse opens wide. Pansies, cool crops, seed potatoes, and early perennials. Mother's Day is our busiest weekend.

Summer

June–August. Full annuals, herbs, vegetables, and tropicals. Hydrangea and rose shipments through July. Water wisely.

Fall

September–October. Mums, asters, ornamental kale, bulbs, and tree/shrub planting season. Great time to divide perennials.

Winter

November–February. Reduced hours. Poinsettias and cut greens for the holidays. Planning catalogs and seed orders at the counter.

Hours by season

Peak season (April–October): Monday–Saturday 9:30am–6pm, Sunday 10am–5pm.

Late fall (November): Monday–Saturday 9:30am–5pm, Sunday 10am–4pm.

Winter (December–February): Reduced schedule — typically Saturday 10am–4pm with select weekday hours around holidays. Always call (952) 474-3191 before driving out in January.

Seasonal tips from our bench

  • Wait for soil to warm before planting tomatoes — Memorial Day weekend is a safe bet
  • Fall-planted trees and shrubs establish roots before winter freeze
  • Mulch after the ground cools in late fall, not before
